The goal of our dentist, Dr. Wali Hamidy and his team of dental professionals at La Jolla Dental Image is simple – to give patients the healthiest teeth and gums possible. However, that does not stop at a brilliant white smile. In the La Jolla dental office, patients will also have access to a long list of treatments that ensure true dental health, including straightening for proper bite alignment to treatment for TMJ and/or TMD.
What is TMJ/TMD?
Temporomandibular joint dysfunction is a widespread and surprisingly common problem that plagues more than seventy million people at any given time. Long believed to be due to a misalignment of the upper and lower jaws, experts now know that it can be due to many factors.
The jaw area is one of the most complex in the body due to the many directions that the joint must be able to move and flex. When muscular or joint pain occurs here, it can lead to a long list of associated problems, and almost any of them can cause further dental issues.
Just consider some of the usual symptoms of TMD:
- Chronic headache
- Neck, shoulder, or upper back pain
- Popping or grinding sounds and/or sensations in the jaw joint
- Limited movement of the jaw, even locking of the jaw
- Ringing in the ears
- Pain in the jaw
- Soreness and pain in the teeth
- Cracked, chipped or loosening teeth
- New and uneven wearing of the teeth
- Bruxism (grinding the teeth)
- Numbness in arms and fingers
Clearly, these are all signs that your teeth and gums are not as healthy or protected as possible, and a visit to the La Jolla dental office of Dr. Hamidy is in order!
How Will TMD Be Treated?
Generally, it is of the utmost importance to realign and rebalance the muscles of the jaw area. Using “neuromuscular dentistry”, Dr. Hamidy will ensure that your jaw is in the appropriate physiologic position for a healthy and functional bite. Your muscles will be returned to a natural position and many of the symptoms will be alleviated!
To keep it as simple and clear as possible, patients with TMD symptoms will have their jaws realigned through the use of restorative dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, orthodontics, and any other treatments that will end the stress on the jaw muscles that result from a poor bite.
A healthy bite is part of optimal dental health. As your healthiest smile is the goal of this dental office, treating TMD is just as important as treating cavities or doing regular cleanings.
